KNOW YOUR VEHICLE PARTS AND THEIR PURPOSES

Each and every component of your vehicle has a significance and as such it is important to know the various parts and their purposes. Whether  you own or rent vehicles, we believe that it is essential for everyone to understand even the major vehicle parts which can help you in unwanted situations such as brake and engine failure. In this blog we give you a crash course on vehicle parts and their purposes.

various car parts

Major car parts

Ignition system

Spark Plugs,  Ignition wires & Coil packs are all components of the vehicle’s ignition system. The purpose of the ignition system is to create a spark when the piston is at the top of its compression stroke. This will ignite the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder of the engine to get it running.

Ignition system

Vehicle parts – Ignition

Engine

The engine is designated as  the heart of the car or its main power source. Fuel enters the engine where it is compressed, lit internally and results in the inflation of gases that generates power to the wheels.

Vehicle parts – Engine

Alternator

The main function of  the alternator is to generate power for the electrical components of the car and to charge the battery. This in turn provides electricity to run headlights, brake lights, and internal electrical work. Beware of your battery light and have the issue addressed quickly to ensure that these functions remain optimal.

Vehicle parts – Alternator

Radiator

The continuous movement of engine’s components can make the engine hot, however, the radiator works to keep the engine and other car components cool as it is designed to transfer heat from the hot coolant that flows through it to the air blown through it by the fan. The other components that works with radiator to keep  the car cool are  the Thermostat, Water Pump, Heater , Hoses and Radiator fan.

Suspension

The Suspension System is made up of three major parts – shock absorbers/struts and springs. Without shocks and struts, a vehicle would bounce uncontrollable, making driving extremely difficult and dangerous.

Vehicle parts – Suspension

Chassis

The chassis is the main supporting structure of a motor vehicle, to which all other components are attached and is comparable to the skeleton of an organism.  The engine, power-transmission system, and suspension system are all suitably attached to, or suspended from the chassis.

Muffler

The Muffler is made up of  a set of tubes. These tubes are perforated and are designed to reflect sound waves produced by the engine to minimize the noise that eventually leaves your vehicle. Therefore, it helps to run the car in silent mode and also acts as a way to remove exhaust gases from the engine. Keep your mufflers clean to reduce the build up of exhaust.

Brakes

It is made of different components including Disk & Drum Brakes, Master Cylinder, Power Booster & Anti-lock Brakes. Their main function is to slow down or stop the moving vehicle.  Clean, adjust and replace brake pads as per your vehicle’s schedule.

Cavanor Auto Rentals prides itself in servicing and maintaining all the vehicles in our fleet to ensure optimum performance.

We advise all road users to keep in mind these vehicle parts and their purposes as we at Cavanor Auto Rentals always do. This will  keep you out of unwanted situations and also save you time and money.

Beautiful Jamaica

Jamaica is the best vacation spot in the Caribbean and offers the most amazing road trip scenes. Yes! I might be a little bias but hey, who isn’t? This is my island home we are talking about.

Jamaica is an island of 10,992 square kilometers but has so much to offer. If you are keen to explore, enjoy great food and music, a road trip should definitely be in your itinerary for your trip to Jamaica. Cavanor Auto Rentals offers a wide variety of vehicles from which you can choose to take you on your adventures. Whether you are traveling solo or as a group, Cavanor Auto Rentals has a vehicle that is just right for you. If you haven’t already reserved your vehicle, visit our website and make that booking.

Wide range of vehicles to choose from.

A little reminder, no one under the age of twenty-five (25) is permitted to drive/operate the rented vehicle. Also, your drivers licence must be at least two (2) years old with no endorsement. Your valid home licence is accepted for driving in Jamaica.

Now that you are satisfied with your rental vehicle let’s discover the many blessings Jamaica has to offer as you enjoy the length and breadth of the island on your road trip.

Here are three (3) road trip destinations that will be sure to excite you and keep you coming back for more:

Road Trip From Ocho Rios to Port Antonio

A road trip from Ocho Rios to Port Antonio will let you discover the greener, lusher side of the island in the parish of Portland. Leaving the hustle and bustle of the busy tourist centre of Ocho Rios behind, the drive takes on a more relaxed feel as it directs you through charmingly simple communities along the coast.  Notable stops include GoldenEye, the former home of James Bond’s creator Ian Fleming, and Firefly (possibly the most beautiful coastal view on the island) where playwright Noel Coward not only holidayed but wrote some of his most renowned work. Be sure to stop and take plenty of photographs on the way. Eat some jerk chicken or pork at Boston and relax.

Road Trip From Treasure Beach to Negril

This road trip is about two hours in length and traverses the rugged southern coastline of the island. Here travelers can take in the stunning sights and sounds of southern Jamaica. Grab a fish and festival at Border and top it off with a cold Red Stripe beer. Stop in Bluefields to pay homage to former reggae singer Peter Tosh. Take a swim at any of the public beaches along the way before arriving just in time to catch the stunning sunset on the 7 miles of beach in Negril.

Road Trip From Papine to Newcastle

If you are staying in Kingston a road trip up this winding road from the hot and dusty flats of Kingston takes approximately an hour. It takes you to the cool and refreshing Blue and the John Crow Mountains. Stop to take a photo or have a cup of Blue Mountain coffee along the way (the best you will ever taste). Pack a picnic and visit Hollywell National Park where you can take a guided hike to a breathtaking waterfall. Either way, the drive is a great way to spend a day and enjoy beautiful Jamaica.

Car Rental Tips You Need to Know

23 Sep

Are you seeking a car to rent? It is important to note that when going on a vacation or a weekend getaway, renting a vehicle can save you money. It eliminates the need to waste money on expensive taxi rides. Car rental also prevents you from being dependent upon the schedule of friends and family. However,  as potential car rental customers, one should be mindful of a few things. As such we at Cavanor Auto Rentals are eager to share with you some of the most important car rental tips you should know before renting a car. Not just from us, but from anyone.

Tip 1: Make sure you have your documents

There is absolutely nothing worse than arriving at a car rental company to realize that you have forgotten your driver’s licence back home. The driver’s licence should be at least two years old and have no endorsements. As a potential customer, also remember to take along a valid credit card in your name. Cavanor Auto Rentals in their own discretion may accept an upfront cash deposit in lieu of a credit card after security checks are done.

Tip 2: Check the car exterior and interior

This is an important car rental tip potential customers should always be mindful of and prevents you from being responsible for another person’s damage to the vehicle. Cavanor Auto Rentals assist customers with this with our vehicle checklist. An experienced technician is available to ensure customers inspect the car before heading on their way for any scratches, dents, etc or utilize your camera to take pictures or video.

Every car is different.  There is a possibility that you will not be renting the same car model as you are accustomed to at home. Before heading out, make sure to take some time to adjust the seat and mirrors to your liking. Check where the car functions such as air conditioning, lights, windshield wipers, and handbrake are located (normally facilitated by our technicians). Once you have familiarized yourself with the vehicle you are ready to go.

Tip 3: Always use seatbelts. Do not drink and drive

You know the drill guys. This is the most important car rental tip that we can share with you.  Take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and those around you.

use seat belt

Tip 4: Know your  car rental period & get back in time

Car rental companies, especially during the high seasons, run on a very tight schedule.  Return the rental vehicle at the agreed time as late charges accumulate fast and might cost you a full rental day plus extras. Cavanor Auto Rentals allow a maximum one hour grace period provided that the hour falls within opening hours. If you suspect that you will be late please call your rental agency in advance to make the necessary arrangements.

Tip 5: Ask what kind of fuel your rental vehicle uses and fuel up

Your vacation was a blast, that road trip was all you had expected and more. Now it’s time to return the vehicle and head home. It is Cavanor Auto Rentals policy to provide a full tank of petrol. Vehicles returned with less than a full tank of petrol will attract a service charge plus the cost to refuel the vehicle. Make sure to plan extra time in your day to fill up the car before you return it.  It will save you from spending unnecessarily. Also, make sure to know what kind of fuel your vehicle runs with. Most of the vehicles at Cavanor Auto Rentals use  90 octane Unleaded Fuel.

Must-Try Foods, While in Jamaica

25 Jan

If you are visiting Jamaica, a to-do-list is absolutely necessary. Chances are you are planning on going to the beach, chatting with the locals, learning more about the Jamaican culture or eating up a storm. Speaking of eating, Jamaica has a wide range of foods that are exclusive or unique to the island. The spices and the different seasonings are combined to whet your appetite and tantalize your taste buds.
Here is a list of some Jamaican food that you have to try, while you are enjoying your vacation in Jamaica.

ACKEE AND SALTFISH

Ackee, which happens to be Jamaica’s national fruit, is most times combined with saltfish (or codfish) to produce a savory meal which is spicy and salty (not too salty) all at the same time. The dish is also visually appealing as well, as the ackee, which is bright yellow, is surrounded by the seasonings of tomato and green peppers. It is mostly served with festivals or fried dumplings. Although traditionally eaten as a breakfast item, fanatics of this special dish will eat it any time of the day.

JAMAICAN PATTIES

Patties are probably Jamaica’s unofficial meal for lunch. This golden-yellow, half-moon shaped food has a flaky crust on the outside and juicy seasoned fillings on the inside. The fillings vary from beef, cheese or chicken to vegetable, shrimp or ackee. (Yes, ackee patties exist). Whatever fillings you choose, Jamaican patties are definitely something to try when you are visiting Jamaica. A warning though- they are highly addictive!

RICE AND PEAS

A signature dish for a Jamaican Sunday dinner, rice and peas is great with any type of meat. The unique flavor comes from the gungo/pigeon peas, coconut milk, thyme and escallion. Scotch bonnet peppers can also be added if you want it a bit spicy. If you have tried rice and peas before, then you have definitely experienced one of the most important dishes in the Jamaican cuisine.

JAMAICAN JERK CHICKEN OR PORK

Another very popular meal is the Jamaican jerk chicken or pork. Although they are different methods of preparing this meal (meat smoking, with wood burning ovens or barrels filled with charcoals), the spices that contribute to the wonderful and unique taste are the same. These spices include: scotch bonnet peppers, cloves, escallion, thyme, garlic, ginger and salt. Jamaican or not, don’t miss out on the island’s famous jerk – have it alone or with festival, rice and peas or bread.

BREAD PUDDING

A wonderful Jamaican Dessert, the bread pudding is definitely a must have while in Jamaica. Popularly made with days old white or wheat bread, the bread pudding owes its sweet taste to the combined mixture of sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, coconut milk and raisins. A tip of Jamaican rum is also sometimes included. It is also easy to make, so you can try baking it for yourself.
